Christian Council decries military coups in Africa

Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) has expressed concern over growing incidents of coup d’états in Africa, even as it urged African leaders to pursue peace building, religious tolerance and economic development.

The council said while it does not condone the prevalence of corruption in political circles on the continent, it totally condemns military takeovers as an option for governance.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, yesterday, on the upcoming All Africa Conference of Churches (12th General Assembly) and 60th anniversary of CCN, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee, Dr Israel Akanji, said the group believes political and interreligious dialogue remains the best option for social justice.

Akanji, who is also the President, Nigeria Baptist Convention, added: “All Africa Conference of Churches and its member organisations and churches in Nigeria believe that faith and dialogue are powerful tools for change. As such, we are committed to playing a pivotal role in continental efforts towards eradication of militancy and all forms of violence.”
