Should Nigeria Declare a National Emergency on Gender-Based Violence Now?

Rights groups keep raising the alarm about rising gender-based violence and weak enforcement. Would a national emergency declaration drive real protection and prosecution—or just add headlines?

A national emergency on GBV will only matter if it unlocks funding, specialised courts, and survivor services — not just slogans. Practical steps: 24/7 state hotlines integrated with NAPTIP and police desks; protection orders that are quick and enforceable; and forensic capacity so cases don’t collapse in court. LGAs should partner CSOs to run shelters with psychosocial support and legal aid. Faith leaders can help shift norms by preaching consent, dignity, and accountability, not victim-blaming. Data is key: states must publish quarterly reports (complaints, prosecutions, convictions, timelines). When abusers see consequences, behaviour changes. Let’s resource the system end-to-end.
